SIMILAR TO EVERY WORKDAY, Winifred Chapman, an African American maid of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, made her way towards the rented residence of 10050 Cielo Drive. At the time she had been a loyal maid to the Polanski family for a year and four months. Winifred had made the journey from her home to the rented property every day, an instinctual journey that has become her normal way of life. Winifred usually took a cab to the Polaski residence, but the morning of August 9, 1969, she was picked up by a friend at the bus stop, who then drove her straight to the front gate of the residence.

Manson grew up with a rough childhood, as he described, his mother was an alcoholic prostitute and he never really knew his father. He was placed into an all boys school as a young boy, and often ran away to his mother; who consequently rejected his presence. He resorted to a life of crime, living day to day on the streets, supported by petty crime. When asked to describe Manson’s appearance in a photo, student Cassie Wood said he had a “crazy look in his eyes, and a distraught, disheveled appearance”. Another student, Abigail Mahoney described him as containing a “look of insanity” through his “unkempt and wild” complexion. Probation reports described Charles as suffering from a “marked degree of rejection, instability and psychic trauma”. These psychological problems were further worsened when his dreams of becoming a famous musician were crushed. To feed Manson’s persona of “constantly striving for status and securing some kind of love”, he created a group of loyal followers that he considered his family.
