Males naturally have more testosterone, and therefore usually act more aggressively and become violent more quickly than females. Video games have become very prevalent in childhood, especially with adolescent boys. I believe that video games are enhancing the aggression that is already there, because many of the games display acts of violence. For example, the Grand Theft Auto games portray a life-like scene where the player gets to control the character. You can make the character fight, steal, kill people, and run from the police. There are many war games in the video game market as well that constantly display characters killing each other. In addition to violence portrayed, the people in these games look almost identical to a physical human being. As well as the people being very life-like, the scenery of these games look as if you were there yourself. Desensitization is a reduction in emotional-related physiological reactivity in response to a stimulus. In other words, when you are constantly exposed to a stimulus over time, eventually it will lose its significance. If a child is exposed to people in a life-like game killing each other every day, he or she will likely become used to seeing this and become less sensitive to experiencing another violent act. This does not mean that because a child is exposed to murder that they will go out and kill someone, however it does mean that they may participate in another act of violence, because it does not seem bad in comparison to the killing that they have experienced. For example, a child may think that it is perfectly fine to steal a candy bar from the convenience store, because they have seen worse things happen like people killing others. They can also justify their actions, because they have seen people on video games steal. Therefore the deviance has become normalized. Because the child has seen it in his or her game every day that
