Some parents will do everything possible to protect their unborn child from harm and disease. Every precaution is taken to ensure that their unborn child is healthy. Now imagine after all these precautions have been taken that your child is unable to communicate. One reason a child may not be able to communicate is the condition, Autism. This paper will discuss what Autism is, the signs and symptoms of Autism, the causes of Autism, the diagnosis and misdiagnosis of Autism, the effects of Autism on children and their families, the educational outlook of children with Autism, and the treatments for children with Autism. They may have common traits of Autism, but may actually have some other ASD disorder, such as Asperger Syndrome, childhood disintegrated disorders, or persuasive developmental disorders. There are certain criteria that must be met before a child is considered to be Autistic. The first set of criteria is qualitative impairment in social interaction as manifested by at least two of the following: marked impairment in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors, failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level, lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests or achievements with others, and lack of social or emotional reciprocity. Some of these medications are antidepressants, psychostimulants, antipsychotic and anticonvulsion medications. There are pros and cons with each of these medications. Medication alone should not be the only treatment for Autism. Some parents have elected to use alternate treatments, such as diet modification and vitamin therapy.
