Entitlement
In relation to the dynamics in adoptive family development, the authors of, Child Welfare and Family Services, define entitlement as, “a process that occurs before and during the time a child enters the family” (Whitlaw, 405). There are two forms of entitlement. In the legal sense, entitlement is achieved once the adoption papers are signed. However, emotional entitlement can be more complicated. In both Ashley’s and the Courter’s case, legal entitlement was gained when Ashley said the three little words of, “I guess go.”
At first I was very surprised that these were the three little words, but the more I thought about them, the more they made sense. Originally, I assumed they would be, “I love you.” But at this point in the book, Ashley clearly did not feel that way towards to Courters. In fact, signing the adoption papers seemed only to confuse Ashley even more about what she wanted. However, as time passed, Ashley started showing signs of emotional entitlement.
