Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children. Cancer is defined as a disease that allows the cells in your body to grow and divide that cannot be controlled. There are many different types of cancers such as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Lymphoma, and Solid Tumors. About 175,000 children ages 14 and under is diagnosed cancer with each year. More than 80% of childhood cancer patients become long-term survivors. In the United States more than 420,000 children around the world are cancer survivors. Leukemia is the most common cancer found in children. Hodgkin Lymphoma are most common in children who have been infected with a virus, HIV, weakened immune system, or have a close relative who has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. About 1,180 children are diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma each year. Boys are more likely to get Hodgkin lymphoma. Hodgkin is treated by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy. Chemotherapy helps kill the cancer cells or helps them stop growing. Chemo can be either be injected into the bloodstream or may be given by mouth. Radiation therapy uses high energy X-rays to kill the cancer cells or stops them from growing. Radiation therapy may disrupt the bones and tissues in children. Using radiation therapy may put your child at risk for having a heart disease or second chances of having cancer. Neuroblastoma is the deadly solid tumor that affects the outside of the brain. Neuroblastoma is detected before birth by ultrasound. More than 95% of children are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma by the age of 10. The treatment for Neuroblastoma include Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, Retinoid therapy, and Immunotherapy. Surgery is used to remove the whole tumor or as much as they can before the cancer spreads even more. There are so side effects and risks factors depending on where the surgery takes place. Serious side effects include excess bleeding, anesthesia, blood vessel damages and infections, kidney infection, or any other damaged organs and nerves. Chemotherapy for is used to help destroy the cancerous cells in the body. The main chemotherapy drugs used for Neuroblastoma include cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, vincristine, doxorubicin, etoposide, topotecan, and melphalan. The chemo drugs are attacking the cancerous cells to stop them from dividing quickly. The side effects for doing chemotherapy include loss of appetite, hair loss, mouth sores, nausea, bruising or bleeding easily, diarrhea or constipation, and fatigue. Many of these side effects only last for a short period of time and tend to go away when treatment is completed. When the drug cyclophosphamide is used during chemo it can damage the bladder and may cause blood in the urine. Doxorubicin can damage the heart and skin when used during chemo.
