Oncologists are extremely important to be sure children that have been diagnosed with cancer can still live a normal life. Oncologists explain the type of cancer, discuss treatment options, and help maintain the patient’s quality of life. The main types of oncologists are medical, surgical, and radiation and these doctors work together to treat the cancer patient. Medical oncologists (can also be called clinical oncologists) use forms of treatment such as chemotherapy to treat patients, while surgical oncologists perform biopsies and treat patients by removing tumors. Radiation therapy is the main form of treatment used by radiation oncologists ("Types of Oncologists"). Pediatric oncologists treat cancers in children and young adults.
