Interacting with Children of Diversity

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to discuss children and diversity inside and outside of the classroom. For this project, I chose two special needs students in my classroom. Twin girls Chloe and Lilly age four born prematurely. Both Chloe and Lilly started the day after our winter break in January and did not come full time until the end of February. Both girls are delayed both physically and mentally. Each girl has been diagnosed with autism and dysphagia (feeding and swallowing disorder) with Lilly having a more severe case of dysphagia and Chloe severer characteristics of autism. “The count of students ages 6-21 with disabilities fell to a low of 5.67 million in fall 2011, but had risen to 5.83 million by fall 2014, the most recent year for which statistics are available”. A third of the increase came from the state of New York but it is unclear as to why (Number of U.S. Students in Special Education Ticks Upward). In 2014 63 percent of students with a disability graduated from high school 20 percent lower than the national average. In the states of Georgia, Mississippi and Nevada students with a disability graduated at half the rate of students with no disability (The Special Education Graduation Gap). First, they have the disorder and the challenges it poses. Second, they must spend most of their time in school dealing with things they are not good at. The author feels that from the start that special needs students need to be told what they are doing right and focus on activities that focus on their strengths (http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2013/04/08/fp_armstrong.html). I feel that this is not only true of special needs students but all students. Teachers need to help students find what they are good at and gear them towards that type of learning and understanding instead of just focusing on one way to do things. In my Pre-K, special needs class I have students that are not identified now as special needs but struggle with basic ABC or number skills but to give this student who is five years old something to take apart and put back together or make something else out of it he thrives.
