Depending on the region, there is a limited amount of rainfall for growing crops, and irrigation is not widely available. The Northern parts of Chile are arid and desert like, with very little rainfall. As you move South, rainfall increases. As the snow melts from the Andes mountains and glaciers, farmers worry about less annual rainfall, less melting snow and glaciers, along with the growing demand for water, will lead to a future crisis. Global warming is a worry to farmers, temperatures are on the rise. The increasing temperatures have been causing problems for the fruit and wine producers. The grape vines are sensitive to the heat, and the hotter temperatures have caused grapes to ripen too quickly, affecting the quality of the wine. Global warming is also causing the glaciers to shrink more rapidly, the long-term effects of this would be water shortages. The last challenge many farmers face is air pollution. In Chile, farmers must burn the wheat stubble because it is thicker and it isn’t hot enough for a long enough period of time to naturally break down. This causes the grapes in that area to take on a smoky flavor; you may not notice the favor in raw grapes, but in wine it has a smoky flavor. Wineries do not know if the wine will taste of smoke until after the grapes have been processed. Chile exports 95% of the wine to the
