In Christopher Hitchens ten minute video he provides us with three main reasons as to why he rejects the idea of religion and God. The first one being that in his personal opinion it is to wish to be slave. It takes ownership of our entire being. Before life and afterlife, It takes ownership of who you are, what you do and can even take control of what you eat. It “insults” us in the sense that it implies that without the existence of a greater God or greater good, we alone, as humans would not be able to decide what is right from wrong. We would not be able to make correct and moral decisions on our own. The last and final reason being that religion is our first version of the truth. Hitchens goes on to state that because it is our first explanation it is also the worst. That we now have better reasons and explanations for our questions and our doubts.
I struggle to agree with Hitchens first stated idea because it implies that by being a believer we are only conducting ourselves to rules and pain without the opportunity of good. We are subjecting ourselves without the possibility of any good coming from it and many people would say, myself included, that although religion could keep us absent from certain things, it also provides us with other great things in return. Many people have accredited their God or faith of freeing them from disease, financial problems and other struggles. I also reject Christopher second idea because I do not believe that every single moral “rule” that we currently have is attributed solemnly to faith. I have met both skeptics and believers who have similar ethics and moral values. Their faith never changed the fact that they do not condone issues such as racism and rape.
