The American Red Cross Battlefield nurse, determined, and hardworking are three words that people think of in connection to Clara Barton. Many people know that Clara Barton was a nurse but she was such much more. As a nurse, Clara Barton showed America that no matter your gender, you can be anything you want to be. She left a legacy as a battlefield nurse who changed the way we look at nursing today. At a young age Clara’s elder brother David fell sick. With no doctors around Clara tended to him. She looked after David throughout her childhood. After helping David on his feet again, Clara developed the love of nursing and she knew at that point in her life that she wanted to be a nurse. Clara knew it would be hard to become a nurse in the society around her but all four of her siblings pushed her to follow her dream of being a nurse and if it wasn’t for them she might not have been the Clara Barton we know today. Many people knew her as only a nurse but she also had many other jobs. She was a teacher at the young age of only 15. She opened a free public school for kids so that anyone would be able to go to school. When Clara first started as a teacher she was very hesitant and was nervous but she soon created a love for it. During battles Clara would be on the battlefield running around healing the victims and bringing them food. At one battle while she was aiding one of the wounded soldiers her shirt was shot through only missing her arm by less than an inch, this experience made her very thankful and made her only appreciate her life more. She kept the shirt that had been shot through for the rest of her life so, she would remember to be thankful for her life.
