Assignment 1
I have never specifically looked at education through the classic sociological theories. Through structural functionalism, roles and statuses are highlighted and have an overall effect on many aspects of education. I thought about how the dynamics of classrooms have greatly affected the ease or tension of the class. I recall all the times I have had a professor say that his current class is the best they have ever had, and I always wonder what the dynamic is like in their least favorite class.
One major topic that I think is important is considering who determines what the curriculum includes. Through new sociological views on education there is a focus on what information is treated as fact and priority. Another great concern in education is the quality of educations being received. It is already clear how much better an education becomes with more funding and opportunity. Lastly, it is very important to view the education system through many different lenses to be able to see problems that would typically be overlooked. Typically, education in sociology is viewed through the functionalists theory, the conflict theory, and the interaction theory. Modern sociology in education has taken a shift to be more inclusive an look at the issues that divide groups.

I have never considered how schools are far from democracies even though it tries to uphold democratic beliefs and practices. I always felt that my education growing up could have been better had they considered the students thoughts and feelings more. Entire grades of children could all identify what teachers were adequate and those who were not, so why did the staff never ask us?
