Developmental Abnormalities of the Oral Cavity- Analyzation of Cleft Lip and Palate
Abnormalities are a major concern that expecting parents have to face in the beginning stages of child development. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, cleft lip and palate are considered one of the most prevalent congenital facial anomalies and it occurs in 1 in 800 births around the sixth to eighth week of pregnancy (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (2015, May). Cleft lip and palate are congenital abnormalities (birth defects) that may occur within the lip or mouth of a child during pregnancy separately or together, due to fissure at roof of the mouth failing to fuse together, both abnormalities can be associated with other syndromes

The birth defect can greatly affect a child’s life. Statistics indicate that cleft lip and palate effect 1 in 800 children and occurs in the 6th to 8th week of pregnancy. Cleft lip and palate materialize because of an incomplete fusion of the nasal and axillary processes. There are genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that may add to the complications associated with cleft lip and palate. Clip lip and palate may be diagnosed at birth and the sooner it is diagnosed the better the outcome is for the child. Cleft lip and palate is a very frequent disorder and more studies are becoming available to aid children with the birth defect.
