During my time at Three Fountains, I encountered many individuals with a wide range of disabilities and disorders. Some of the disorders that I encountered include, schizophrenia, learning disabilities, developmental delay, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), personality disorders, autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. During this fieldwork experience, I remembered that first impressions are extremely important because first impressions help to gain the patient’s trust (Davis, 2011, p. 159). During my time at Three Fountains, I conducted an interview with an older gentleman that has multiple disorders and diagnosis. During the interview I kept in mind good timing, artful phrasing, and nonverbal communication. “A good interview depends on appropriate attitude, good timing, and artful phrasing” (Davis, 2011, p. 160). Good timing is referred to as choosing a good time to interview the client where you will not encounter interruptions and are able to focus and listen to the patient as they talk about their problems. He is unable to live alone and function independently. He lives in a group home and receive assistance with most of his occupations. His problems affect him being able to work due to having outbursts and behavioral issues. Fortunately, this client is still able to maintain relationships with others. He engages in social activities with those around him and when he is not acting out he is very friendly. His diagnosis does not impact his quality of everyday life. Although he may need assistance with some occupations, he still is able to hold a basic conversation with others and engage in activities. He struggles to answer more complex questions and often loses his train of thought and forgets what you are talking about.
