For the Coaching Observation I choose to monitor a sport that I had a background in so I would have a deeper understanding of what the coach was saying. On February 2, 2016 at 4:00 pm I watched Tammy the coach of the High School Swim Team for a total of 60 minutes. The athletes ages varied 15-18 years old, there was nine girls and one boy who attended. Prior to walking into the observation I knew that the team was at the end of their season. Which mean that the atmosphere was a little bit care free to start off they had music playing, lots of giggling and care free attitudes prior to practice. This is definitely an important aspect because it provided context to the situation. The beginning of practice started with film of Olympic athletes …show more content…
During the observation the category mistake-contingent technical instruction was the highest with a total of nine different instances. This data is very interesting due to the fact that mistake-contingent encouragement was only accounted for once in the 90 minutes. During the observation session she said “Isabell you can’t push off of the wall on that much of an angle you need to keep things horizontal, remember good body positioning and those angles”. This is an example of one of the mistake-contingent technical instruction that took place, because after Isabell push off incorrectly Tami stepped in and told her what to focus on and what needed to take place. As a coach it is very apparent that she is far more reactive than spontaneous. Which simple means that as a coach she should be aware of that so she can appeal to the diverse types of people that she …show more content…
For Tammy a few things that I would recommend giving a extra attention to during her daily practice would be General communication(2/38) which is congruent with ignoring mistakes (7/38) and general encouragement(2/38). The big concept that could use a little work would be communication as whole. If Tammy would work on being extremely clear, watching, listening, and other factors these other things will improve as well. During the observation she exemplified multiple moments where the communication was lacking, however one particular situation really stood out to me when they were at the diving blocks. One of the athletes asked how was my last start? Tammy said, it was terrible go do it again. This is a perfect example of lacking communication skills because the athletes doesn’t know exactly what it is they did wrong or what they would differently the second time around. Communication is definitely a very important building block of being a coaching and I think it would make Tammy an even better coach than she already is if she could strengthen this vital area. According to the competence motivation theory one of the very first sections is feedback and reinforcement which are both very crucial steps that required the coach to communicate with the athletes effectively. If this very valuable step is missed then it could result in the team's overall lack of motivation. Which
