If Mr. Kremer decided to be implanted with the cochlear implant device, the next step is intervention. Intervention can take place in form of counseling, assertiveness training, auditory training, speech and language therapy. Since Mr. Kremer has had a sensorineural hearing loss the majority of his life and has used hearing aids since his college years, the treatment would be considerably different from an individual who has never used amplification devices. Kremer is completed seven weeks of therapy after receiving his cochlear implant, a combination therapy approach would be best for his age, lifestyle and needs. Individualized therapy is when the individual with hearing loss is working directly with the clinician in a clinic setting. In Mr. Kremer’s case, individualized therapy would be beneficial for the first session when the cochlear implant is really new. During the first 6 sessions, Mr. Kremer and his clinician will work intensively on information counseling for his new cochlear implant and auditory training. They will use the Ling 6 Check, which includes 6 of the phoneme frequencies that are most popular in the English language. The Ling 6 Check will help determine if the cochlear implant device is working properly. During the first 6 sessions, they will also work on phoneme changes between works (ex: f versus p – fat/pat, fill/pill, etc.). Group Therapy is not always readily available, but if he is receiving his individual therapy at a university clinic, there is a chance the graduate students hold group therapy sessions. For the first two 30-minute session, group therapy will consist of Mr. Kremer and other adult individuals who have received a cochlear implant. They will discuss the good thing and bad things that have happened since their implantation related to their new device. They can work on skill that they may be struggling with after their individual session have completed. The final two sessions will consist of Mr. Kremer and his wife.
