In the United States, a student drops out of school every 26 seconds which leads to over 1.2 million dropouts a year. The debate of whether or not to drop out of school is an issue many teens face. While the dropout rate has slightly dropped over the years, the pressures teens face are still there. Pregnancy, academic struggles, and chronic absenteeism are all factors that can lead to dropping out. Although many students decide to drop out of school for their own various reasons, that one action may lead to many long term problems. Becoming pregnant while still a student is a very scary and difficult time for teens. It has been shown that one third of teen girls will drop out of school because of pregnancy and parenthood. Feeling embarrassed or scared about how classmates will react to the news is one of the top reasons a pregnant teen will drop out. But with the fatigue and time loss of carrying and raising a child makes continuing on with school a lot more difficult resulting in dropping out. But 88% of high school dropouts were chronic absentees and have missed at the least 20 school days. Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% of a school year for any reason and it is a leading cause of dropping out. Upon missing a lot of school students tend to fall behind in their classes and miss out on more days out of the embarrassment and lack of motivation to catch up.
