1. What geographic features make Colombia especially well prepped for cocaine trafficking?
Colombia is a large country with dense forests and ideal positioning all of which make Colombia well prepped for cocaine trafficking. According to Abadinsky (2013): “much of rural Colombia is isolated by hilly, trackless terrain” (p. 137). The “hilly and trackless terrain” coupled with the dense forests shield cocaine processing centers and air strips that are used for transportation. In addition Colombia is in an ideal position “to receive coca from Peru and Bolivia, and to export the processed drug to the United States by air or sea” (Abadinsky, 2013, p.136).

Political features are impactful as well. Those who are involved with drug trafficking mistrust the political and economic factors of Colombia. The lack of trust leads to a tolerance for violence and an acceptance towards violating the law. More so, there are many areas of Colombia that experience a weak or non-existent governmental presence leading to a feeling of isolation. According to Abadinsky (2013): “government presence is concentrated in the cities of the Andean Mountains and is essentially nonexistent in Southern Colombia” (p.137). Abadinsky calls the area where there is no government presence “the vacuum” and explains that “the vacuum is ideal for coca cultivation and cocaine manufacturing because it left areas where only local officials had to be bribed and that was cheaper and less risky” (Abadinsky, 2013, p.137).
