It is well known that arrival of Columbus to South America was produced in 1498 in his third travel to the new world. In this travel, Columbus, divided his expedition, sending some ships directly to the Dominica passage, and going to more southern waters, with another two ships, trying to find out new lands. The first land where Columbus and his explorers arrived was the gulf of Paria, where they found some tribes, with who they trade with pearls. Beside, Columbus was marveled with the lands he had found, describing them like “another world” (otro mundo). Particularly interesting for Columbus were the mountains of the Paria peninsula, visible at the north from where they were, so, when the time comes that the cargo was beginning to being spoiled, Columbus with his explorer moved through the Caribbean coast to the west, where they discovered the Marguerite Island and, then, going to the north to Dominica, where they finally arrived with their cargo, composed basically of traded pearls and brazilwood, virtually …show more content…
The Niño-Guerra expedition arrived to La Española and then it moved to the gulf of Paria, from where it begins to sail to the west, discovering the Pearl Coast, between the Caribbean coast of the mainland and the Marguerite Island. This expedition was really profitable, as Carl O. Sauer describes, referring to and account made by Peter Martyr, who “was told that they [Niño-Guerra] brought back 96 pounds) of pearls, some of hazelnuts, very clear and beautiful, though poorly strung”
