One does not need to know ASL to communicate with a Deaf person. Rochester Institute of Technology has developed 5 strategies to remember when communicating with a deaf person.
1. The first few encounters will be awkward, get over it!
2. Using pen and paper is ok! Use a combination of hand gestures, facials expressions, and writing down words.
3. There is no rush, take your time to communicate and connect with a deaf person. Slow down, take your time and ask for clarification if you need it.
4. Deaf people listen with their eyes. Vision is the most valuable instrument they have to communicate information. Only communicate when you have eye contact. Keeping eye contact is a sign of respect.
