Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a form of combined outreach that can have a drastic positive impact on a group or subculture. The main idea is to involve local groups, community leaders, and the at-risk population to make a positive change within their neighborhood. CBPR has become widely recognized as a powerful approach to examining and addressing health disparities (Minkler, Blackwell, Thompson, & Tamir, 2003). The outreach was called ‘Place to Call Home’ and was centered in a neighborhood outside Philadelphia (APTR, n.d.). HP2020 uses a MAP-IT outline to program planning to impact communities similar to the one in the case study. MAP-IT is an acronym that stands for; mobilize, assess, plan, implement, and track (Healthy People 2020, 2018). The case study nearly followed this outline step-by-step. First, the outreach mobilized local groups such as the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts program. Additionally, they had the at-risk teens help out by photographing doors of homes within the neighborhood. Then they assessed teens that are homeless or have shelter insecurities and what their needs were as well as the health implications were. There was a plan in place to revitalize the neighborhood and bring some sort of stability to the at-risk population. The implementation was carried out by the community as well as a local artist who painted murals and homes. A local crack home was refurbished and turned into a livable place because of this outreach project. Lastly the tracking was a follow up with the youth and seeing how they became involved and were using art to express themselves and improve their living
