Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to make it to the top of Mount Everest in 1955. It was a huge accomplishment for both Hillary, who was a mountaineer and Norgay, who was a sherpa. In this statement, Hillary means that conquering yourself is more important than conquering the mountain.
