He showed interest in practicing law. Having already taught himself math and grammar, Lincoln started reading law books. He passed the bar exam and began to work as a lawyer. Lincoln worked hard in the Illinois State legislature, later serving a term in Congress. After a few political up and downs and a period of small political progress, he became president number 16 of the United States, leading a war and preserving the Union, signing the Emancipation Proclamation bringing freedom to many slaves. The abolition of slavery brought joy to some; others were not happy about it. That was the case of 26-year-old John Wilkes Booth that three days after the end of the Civil War shot and killed Lincoln. They also obtained positions of responsibility in their nation, escalating a ladder of success for themselves, until achieving the highest rank of them all. Both of these men made important social and historical changes for both of their nations. Both of their lives were cut short by
