Colonists in New England had to deal with very cold winters. The lands were flat along the coast while the inlands were very hilly. The soil was rocky, making farming difficult. The cold weather helped reduce the spread of disease. Because of the cold climate and rocky soil, farms were very small. New Englanders relied on other businesses to make money such as fur, shipbuilding, fishing, and trading. Colonists also relied on English imports such as glass, linens, paint, and household items.
