The poem is not considered a reliable source because it was written 85 years after the night of the event. The poem was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1860. The midnight ride happened in 1775. There is an 85 year time span between the actual date and the date the poem was written. Throughout 85 years the story could have been changed and parts of the truth could have been forgotten or twisted. The poem is a secondary source, unlike the letter.
