Specifically, Zeffirelli and Luhrmann are composers who applied setting to define Romeo and Juliet’s passionate love and unnecessary conflict. In Zeffirelli’s film version, he used setting to visually place the first fight scene in the markets/town to show the unnecessary conflict between the Capulets and Montagues by using an innocent central town to show how powerful their hatred is for one another. This makes the audience think their hatred is so powerful, they can use the most innocent settings to fight and show their conflict through sword fighting. In contrast, Luhrmann has used setting in the marriage scene to show the passionate love behind the unnecessary conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues by showing the calmness of the church and how without the family’s feud, there is love and peace between Romeo and Juliet. This makes the audience think Romeo and Juliet are going to bring peace to their family’s feud as the setting is formal, symbolises peace and shows their undying, passionate love for one another.
