Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is used to change the behavior of purging and the act of binge eating with a professional psychologist. This is the first treatment option and experimentally, the best option for adults with BN. CBT involves self-monitoring, regular eating, and professional help. Self-monitoring comprises of food diaries including details of what the individual eats throughout the day. This is used to avoid binge eating and to ensure the person is consuming their regular portioned meals at appropriate times; this relates back to regular eating. Regular eating, also known as the three-hour rule, involves planned meals to secure the suitable meals for the changing person. The rule included three planned meals and 2-3 planned snacks in-between. In order to do so, therapists use Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) (Williams et al., 2017). This therapy has three subgroups: threat, drive and soothing (Wnuk et al., 2015). CFT is given in 16-week sessions in which they learn how to express, control, and adapt their emotions. Therapists work towards bringing these three to equilibrium, as they stable their expressions and mood. Many people who suffer from an eating disorder have low self-esteem. These individuals are unhappy with their appearance and weight. CFT works on building self-love and compassion (Williams et al., 2017).
