Concentration of iron (II) formed for increasing concentrations of tartaric acid.
The concentration of iron (II) formed from the various concentration of tartatic acid differed (Figure 2). For the difference concentrations of tartaric acid, the concentration of iron (II) was 1.36uM for 50uM of tartaric acid, 2.71uM for 70uM of tartaric acid, 3.0um for 100uM of tartaric acid.
Discussion
The purpose of our study was to view the effect different concentrations of organic substances has on the reduction of iron (III) to iron (II). Through our experiment, the data collected supported the hypothesis that greater concentrations of organic substances increases the rate in which iron (III) is reduced. This was evident as when we increased the concentration of tartaric acid, the amount of iron (II) formed also increased. As a result, we concluded that the amount of organic substance has an effect on the reduction of iron (III) as there was a positive correlation between the concentration of organic substance and concentration of iron (II). By having larger quantities of organic substances in aquatic systems, more iron (II) becomes available to be used by the organisms present. The data collected was complementary to other studies performed on
