Penrod and Hupcey (2005) have provided an overview on everyday concepts and scientific concepts and how the philosophical underpinnings play a role in understanding and interpreting the concept of interest. It is important to differentiate between concept analysis and concept advancement, it is essential to understand them as separate entities since they are distinct phases in a research process. The ultimate aim after concept analysis is to incrementally advance the concept by building a theory for use in science. So it makes sense to analyze the concepts within the theory that provides conceptual meaning within the realm of complex human experiences. The analogy of the theoretical tapestry exemplifies this tone.

In advancing a concept, the researcher focuses on new insights and identified gaps found in the literature. This process enables the researcher to focus on strategic progression of inquiries to develop a clear understanding and meaning of a concept.An emerging theory links related concepts and moves forward in building and naming a theory. This process which is qualitative in nature involves discovering new knowledge and advancing the emerging theory to a higher level theory that will eventually guide practice.
The authors provided an example of concept advancement of uncertainty experienced by family caregivers when placing their older parents in nursing homes. A principle-based concept analysis on uncertainty revealed that it was rather difficult to find the implied meaning of this concept from the literature. The authors advanced the concept of uncertainty using the phenomenological study of states of uncertainty. This process provided insights of the lived experience of uncertainty. The types and modes of uncertainty were intergrated to develop a theory of this concept. The strategic progression of the concept is incremental but will eventually develop into a higher level theory useful for clinical intervention based on evidence based nursing
