In contact sport nowadays a lot of tackles that can inflict serious brain injuries, in sports like NFL or rugby the tackle have become better due to the sports science end of things evolving. Managers and coaches now know how to get the very best out of their players whether it is physically and mentally. Professional players now spend hours in the gym shaping their bodies to physically enhance their performance, when players have built themselves up to be 6ft 3inchs and 16st 5lbs plus there is obviously going to be huge forces applied in tackles on the field of play. When these big collisions occur there is going to be a percentage of injuries that are sustained to the head. In a lot of cases the player will get up and play on without knowing the extent of the injury or in other cases they will be assessed on the pitch by a team doctor. The doctor cannot tell straight away the damages done, the only real way to tell the extent of the injury is through a scan in the hospital. In 2009 a survey showed that in the U.S. there was a total of 46,948 people treated for head injuries in emergency rooms which where sustained from playing football (NFL) (Anon., 2014). …show more content…
The injuries are both measured in KPa which is the pressure applied to the brain in the head injury. As can be seen both have suffered an injury but the one on the left have suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) due to the colors in the scan, in spots the brain is highlighted in purple which is top of the KPa scale.
