In Brave New World, the World State uses hypnopaedia to persuade the castes into relying on consumption. The phrases stated in class give evidence that citizens of the World State use consumption as a social status and rely on consumption to fit into society. In the novel, people that conserve are looked down upon because it is a social norm throw away old goods and buy new ones to replace it. In our current society, we have similar amounts of consumption, but have different ways to increase it.
