After believing the coast is clear, a bearded man finds the man and son yet says he has no relationship with the truck people. While the man aims the pistol at the bearded man, the son is snatched by the bearded individual. Without hesitation, the father kills him, using one of the only two bullets in the chamber. After a day of absolute silence, the father states his actions and his purpose saying, “You wanted to know what the bad guys looked like. Now you know. It may happen again. My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you.” The mans sole motivation is keeping the child alive, to carry the “fire” that is the last of humankind, society, purpose. Even though the man took another man's life, his justification is that of his son, a good that must live in the evil that they are in. This situation is similar in the historic “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding in which a plane of boys crashes into an island and the children must survive until rescue. The children were all virtuous and naive, yet the loss of society drove them to become animalistic and barbaric.
