Possibly one of the most useful and yet also the most problematic of modern inventions, the creation of the car. Occurred over a period of years. The first self- propelled car was built by Nicolas Cugnot in 1769. Powered by a steam engine, it could attain speeds of up to 4 miles (6 kilometers) per hour. In 1771 Cugnot suffered the world’s first car accident when he drove another speedier, steam-driven vehicle into the wall.
