Corporal punishment is still a thing in schools in the United States. Corporal punishment is the act of physically hurting someone as a punishment. Schools in some states use it today. Teachers are hitting kids as a punishment. Corporal punishment should not be used in k-12 schools because there are alternative strategies and kids will think it is ok to hit.
The article “Corporal Punishment Persists in U.S. Schools” by Alyssa Morones gives some examples of other ways to solve problems instead of hitting students. The author writes, “They also receive some behavioral support, through lessons developed by a behavior specialist or through a computer based individualized behavior program called Alternate Behavior Educator.” (Morones 38). Hunt claims that “... physical punishment gives the message that hitting is an appropriate way to express feelings and solve problems” (Hunt 10). It is wrong to show kids that hitting is the right way to solve a problem. They need to learn a mature way to handle situations without hitting like some teachers. The author states, “Hitting children teaches them to become hitters themselves. Extensive research data is now available to support a direct correlation between corporal punishment in childhood and aggressive or violent behavior in the teenage and adult years” (Hunt 1). There is research that shows kids becoming violent as they get older. If they become violent, it would cause them to get into more trouble. What if a teacher hits a student and the student decides to hit back, it would be a horrible situation.
