B. Purpose of the session
Due to failed drug screening, and indicating to the probation officer that she was struggling with her sobriety, it was suggested she begin individual counseling sessions. The client agreed that this would be a viable option. The purpose of this session was to identify what the client’s current needs are and processing ways the client can improve recovery maintenance. The client understood the purpose of the session because this was discussed with her at the beginning of the session. The only previous session with client was during observation of her clinical assessment, otherwise interactions occurred during group therapy sessions.
C. Initial observations of the client(s)
The client was informed prior to the session that she would begin serving her sanction immediately following this individual session. The client arrived early so she had time to obtain food to bring with her, the client stated that this put her in a positive mood, and presented upbeat at the beginning of the session. The client indicated acceptance of the sanction and stated feelings of frustrations and shame for relapsing and further the mannerism in which she tried to tamper with her drug screening sample. This was the client first sanction and setbacks are part of the normal recovery process. I tried to have an attitude around this being a learning opportunity for the client in development and improvement of coping mechanism when setbacks occur.
The client appeared disheveled, hair was unkempt, eye makeup was smeared as if worn for several days, but clothing was well maintained. The client’s attitude was identical as in previous interactions with the client at the beginning, but upon further discussion of the sessions topic the client began showing variations in emotional
