I-search essay Criminal Defense Attorneys have a very important role in the courts. Their job is to ensure both sides of the story get out and fight for justice and ensure a fair trial. No matter the circumstances, everyone has a right to defend themselves. I chose this topic because it has been a passion of mine since I was little. Growing up in downtown Denver by City Park gave me a deep care for the public and a desire to make an impact in the community. Throughout my research, I had hoped to gain insight into what it takes to be a lawyer. I focused on the sacrifices I would have to make and the joys I would experience. In addition, the extra years of schooling can be stressful and cause burnout quickly. Lastly, according to Colorado Lawyer Team, “Defense attorney lawyers don’t just bear the weight of their clients’ futures; they also grapple with their own stress. The high-stakes nature of their work, coupled with the inherent unpredictability of the judicial system, can lead to significant job pressure and stress” (COLawTeam). There are many stress factors for a criminal defense attorney. They have to balance their stresses of working long and hard hours with their client's stresses and attachments to the case, all while trying to uphold a good reputation. This can be emotionally draining and hard for a lawyer to do their job. Although there are many challenges for a criminal defense attorney, there are also many benefits. The three joys that I focused on are the sense of reward from community service, intellectual and physical stimulation, and connections. According to H. Michael Steinberg, an active criminal defense attorney with 40+ years of experience, “Defendants possess civil rights to ensure they are treated fairly and given an opportunity to argue their case”
