As a result, those who have been able to acclimate to changing circumstances have faced greater success in navigating crises. The novel Moon of the Crusted Snow demonstrates this understanding and proves that adaptability plays a crucial role in the survival of a community amidst a predicament. The community displays a form of adaptability as they navigate the challenges of their lack of food by embracing a communal approach to the distribution by learning how to ration more efficiently. While Terry discusses solutions for their lack of food, he announces, “We’re going to assess each home’s need, and set rations according to that” (Rice Ch 17). Due to the escalating severity of the food scarcity problem, Evan’s community is forced to confront the reality of not having more than enough food, leaving them no choice but to devise and implement specific rations for each and every family. These rations, devised as an adaptive measure, represent a departure from their normal living style, highlighting the transformative change the community undergoes to address and overcome the obstacle of food scarcity.
