The religion combines the Yoruba beliefs of the slaves and the Catholicism of the Spain conqueror. To make this explanation more credible, I will make an example. The lady of Charity is the Catholic patroness in Cuba, and is greatly revered by the Cuban people and seen as a symbol of Cuba. In Santeria, she has been syncretized with the goddess Ochun. Living in a country where the majority of the population believed in Yoruba religion, I got used to seeing people wearing range wide of different outfits and colors, such as sackcloth as a way to idolize their Gods. Once, I was invited in a party that my neighbor, Juan, was throwing at his house in Baronia neighborhood in Camaguey. In my case I came from a Catholic family and seeing all those people wearing strange attributes and singing a music with an unfamiliar language made me feel like I did not fit in there. Although Juan’s family believed in Yoruba religion and I believed in God, we joined the ties of friendship. Thus, Cuban religious had to do with African’s influences. In conclusion, Cuban culture is rich of history. I love my country, and I hope someday I can return, and visit my roots, my family, and the most important places I left behind. I am proud of my history background which brought me values, identity, and made Cuba a remarkable community where people
