Cultural Background Assessment Culture is an “acquired eclectic sense of common understandings about principles, ethics, customs, and communal habits, which influence the mannerisms of a group of individuals. I am presumed to be of African decedent born in America therefore I am labeled as an African American. I am not sure why I have to be labeled as such but that is life. So, moving forward my name is Anjeanette Mathis and I am a female and the youngest of 12 children born to my parents. My parents David and Ammie were married for 60 years I say that to say; that marriage, family, trust, respect and commitment were all ingrained into my upbringing from the very beginning and still carry on in my adult life.

I am a very much laid-back person I prefer to be in the background assessing the situation. I do not need spotlight I was taught to help people in need if you can help them. Stressing out over a situation is like pouring a cup of water on a house fire it does not fix things. I do not like chaos I like things that are structured and in order but I do not judge anyone who needs a little chaos in their life. My spiritual beliefs guide me to love others as God loves me. I believe in the freedom of speech, the right to be who you are, and a woman’s right to choose. Often people do things that are undesirable or horrific and it makes me wonder how or why they behave that way. However I still believe that it is not for me to judge or condemn them there is a higher power that will handle the situation. My economic background growing up in the inner city taught me to value money but not to covet it; I do not envy the rich because that is not where I am supposed to be in life
