This essay shall explore the cultural regeneration around the North East effecting the entertainment industry and the regeneration of Newcastle. This essay will also identify key changes and explain existing industry practices. Using primary research this essay will include emerging factors and how they can affect industry practice.
Newcastle Upon Tyne is a city located within the North East of England, dating back almost 2,000 years. With a Roman stronghold, followed by the Norwegians, the city has always been a strategic base for many along the River Tyne. Opening in 1994, they operate as a small amateur performing arts group in a converted church, however the church had to close due to an unsafe roof, therefore the performing arts group did not have a venue. However, in 1997 the church was demolished and a new venue was rebuilt on top of the original site. Moreover, the performing arts group were then able to open a new 300 seat venue, providing the local area with a fully functional theatre.
Having looked into these venues within the North East it is clear that there is a lot of change and new developments that have given audiences a new ever changing entertainment sector around former industrial landscapes. Hence the brand new development of Metro Radio Arena which is soon to move from Scotswood road in Newcastle to Gateshead Quay next to Sage Gateshead.
Metro Radio Arena was opened on the 18th of November 1995 formally known as Newcastle Arena and at a cost of £10m £2.5 million grant from the Tyne & Wear Development Corporation.
