In other words they are blamed for initiating and consenting to sex when getting drunk which gives men an automatic yes. Unfortunately these inequalities create false beliefs and assumptions of women consenting. They need to have a voice to speak up and be less stigmatized in terms of their behavior and/or alcohol intake to presumably give guys the consent to sex. Fraternities being the highlight of nightlife on college campuses make them a big contributor of date-rape. Seems ironic considering the higher statistics of sexual assault and rape charges fraternities face, “When we slightly reorganized their data to compare fraternity men against all other men, we found that fraternity men were much more likely than other men to sexually abuse women” (Schwartz and DeKeseredy 1997: 109). Why is it that an organization that promises respect and “innocent fun” results in the highest rape and sexual assault charges on college campuses. Researchers have linked fraternity rituals to promote female rape, “fraternity rituals provide an important mechanism for breaking feelings of dependency upon women. In some houses this involves provision of a new ready-made self that includes sexist and homophobic attitude, designed to show virility and dominance to cope with feelings of powerlessness” (Schwartz and DeKeseredy 1997: 110).
