The audience of this article is the author, David Sedaris' s fan base and people who either berate people for how they talk or have been berated by other people for how they talk.
Sedaris attempts to entertain and inform his audience about the intolerance some people have of not speaking well by telling a story about his life which he experiences intolerance in a way thinks might be entertaining, he also makes money for every book sold. Also the author has stated that he enjoys getting attention which might be another purpose of the book. the theme of this excerpt is that even when people struggle at things like language and get constantly put down they can still get better if they try.
