General Colin Luther Powell

General Colin L Powell is the 65th secretary of state. Colin was born on April 5th, 1937 in New York City, Harlem. His parents are two Jamaican Immigrants. He was appointed Secretary of State by George W. Bush on January 20th, 2001, after being unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he was 64 years old. He served for four years, he left his position on January 26th, 2005. General Colin Powell was the first African-American to serve as the secretary of the state.
General Colin Powell’s Rise to Prominence all started when he was raised in South Bronx. He attended the City College of New York, he then later started military service, joining the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He graduated from the City College of New York in 1958. After his graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. army. He was in the army for 35 years, during that time he had served two tours in Vietnam, stationed in West Germany and South Korea. Colin Powell was National Security for President Ronald Reagan from 1987-1989, then was promoted to the rank of General. He was appointed by president George Bush to chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he served for four years in that time he over saw 28 crises, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991, he retired in 1993.
General Colin Powell had created an organization called “America’s Promise” which helps at risk children. He was nominated for Secretary of state by president George Bush on December 16th 2000.
General Colin Luther Powell’s influence on the U.S. Diplomacy first started while he himself placed emphasis on reaffirming diplomatic alliances which supports a missile defense system, peace in the Middle East, prioritizing sanctions instead of potential “Hotspots” – Eg, Iraq. Focused on reinvigorating U.S. diplomacy through reforms in the Department of State’s organizational culture and infusion of resources for personnel information technology, facilities, and security. President George Bush’s Administration challenged it after being faced in the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
