For many, the Declaration of Independence is viewed as a declaration of war by colonists. This interpretation misses a large aspect of the declaration: its political and social implications for the future. The Declaration of Independence was a major turning point in World History not because it significantly changed the war, but because it set the stage for a national identity and asserted enlightenment principles for the first time.

One popular misconception about the Declaration is that it started the Revolutionary War; it was more a formality than a declaration of war. By 1776, the battles at Bunker Hill, Lexington and Concord had already been fought. George III had declared the colonies in “open and avowed rebellion” by this point. The
