Over the past 15 years technology has increased significantly resulting in the media being able to report things faster than ever to the people. This is both a great thing and a bad thing, because though it does help to give the people immediate access to wats happening around the world 24/7, it creates a false believe that crime is increasing due to the ability to report every crime that occurs. In this essay, I will be looking at the false believe that crime is increasing over the past 15 years, while using facts to support the validity of how crime has decreased over the past 15 (Wood, Daniel B. 2012). First the FBI UCR shows that the violent crime rate has dropped from 504.5 in 2001 to 372.6 in 2015 (FBI-Table 1 2015). Secondly, the incarceration rate has increased over the past 15 years, leading to less criminals being out on the streets to cause crimes. Finally, the number of persons arrested has dropped by around 3 million, which means that less people are committing crimes now than 15 years ago. …show more content…
In 2001 the U.S population was 285,317,559 and the total number of violent crimes was 1,439,480 (FBI-Table 1 2015). The violent crime rate in 2001 was 504.5 (FBI-Table 1 2015). In the most recent UCR which was takin in 2015, the U.S population was 321,418,820 and the total number of violent crimes was 1,197,704 (FBI- Table 1 2015). The violent crime rate in 2015 was 372.6 (FBI-Table 1 2015). The statistics show the from 2001 -2015 the average crime rate decreased by 131.9 which is a very drastic decrease over the span of 15 years. The UCR statistics show that the amount violent crime has decreased which supports my original statement that crime has decreased over the past 15
