After reviewing the FBI Uniform Crime Reports from 2011 to 2012, I was able to see that the violent crime rate dropped four percent, the property crime rate has dropped 0.8 percent, and the arson crime rate dropped five percent. Looking at arson and the sub-categories of violent crime, such as murder, forced rape, robbery and aggravated assault, each crime rate has gone down by a decent number. But a sub-category of property crime, burglary, was the only crime rate that has risen 0.8 percent from 2010 to 2011. I believe that when any crime rate drops by even 0.1 percent, it is a positive reflection on what we are doing to control crime more in our country. This shows that our country’s criminal justice system is doing something correctly to control how much crime is committed in our country. But on the other hand even if crime rises by 0.1 percent we can’t completely blame the criminal justice system, or the people who work in it, for the arising problem. They aren’t going to have the ability to stop every crime that is going to be committed. Overall, any decrease in crimes committed in our country is a good statistic and after looking at the FBI’s UCR statistics I believe that crime will continue to decrease in the United States. Reviewing all the data for the crime committed in the state of New Jersey, my county, and the campus crime at Rowan opened my eyes to the amount of crime that is actually committed around me that I didn’t even know of. In 2010 the total number of violent and property crimes such as rape, murder, robbery, etc. was 46,678. This number is a four percent decrease from the previous year’s statistics. I could not believe how many crimes were committed in total in New Jersey, which were 323,509. This is a crazy number to see because we barely hear of a crime being committed unless it makes headline news. The county I currently live in is Monmouth County and I can say that I was shocked by the amount of crimes that are committed in my county. After going over the statistics represented by the New Jersey State Police UCR, I learned that in 2010 there were 15,232 total crimes committed, 3,403 violent or property crimes in total.
