Honorable Judge, worthy opponent, and diligent timekeeper, my partner and I strongly agree with the resolution that states; that minors accused with violent crimes should be charged as adults. In most states an 18-year-old is considered an adult, and in some states including New York it’s 16. However, juveniles commit terrible crimes just as adults, and therefore should receive equal punishment. A crime is a crime and for that reason Juveniles who commit violent crimes should be punished in the same way as adults. Violent crimes can be defined as murder, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault, larceny-theft, etc.
With so many people concerned about the increase of violent crimes in our society, the logical place to begin the process of changing this dangerous trend is with the nation’s youth. If minors who commit violent crimes were punished as adults, the number of violent crimes committed by youths would drop. Therefore, in the future the number of violent crimes in general would decrease if we were to keep violent offenders in prison for longer sentences, states Brooking Institute. This certainly may be true of many of them and supporters of sending juveniles to adult court are not insensitive to this.
