Definition of health comes from two main sources, the professional definition from nurses, doctors and health care professionals and the lay definitions from the ordinary people in the street. Both definitions are vital as it helps people see health from two different perspectives.
Health and Well-being
Health comes from two main sources, the specialized definition from nurses, doctors and health care professionals also from just ordinary people. Health and Well- being can be described and explained in many ways. Health and Well-being can be described as the absence of physical illness, disease and mental distress. This is a negative definition of health and well-being. Health and Well-being can also be described as the achievement and maintenance of physical fitness and mental stability. This is a positive definition of health and well-being. Health and Well-being as being the result of a combination of physical, social, intellectual and emotional factors. This is a holistic definition of well being. Health and Well-being is maintained when individuals are able to meet all their physical, social and intellectual needs, preserving good physical and mental health. It is very difficult to separate the aspects of health as they are interrelated and interdependent.
Health
The most famous modern definition of health was created during an opening to the constitution of the world health organisation, as adopted by the international health conference. The WHO definition to health is; ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. Many things can affect a human’s heath.
Ill Health
Ill Health is when you are in a state in which you are unable to function normally and without pain. It is an abnormal process in which aspects of social, physical, emotional, or intellectual conditions and functions of a person are diminished or compared with that person’s previous condition. There are three main concepts of ill health; ill health as a subjective sensation of illness; ill health as a disease, and finally, ill health as a disorder or failure within the body.
Ill Health as a disease
Ill health as a disease involves a member of a medical team discussing the patient’s symptoms after an examination. The symptoms could be from bleeding to finding lumps on their body. After that the doctor will have to diagnose the patient with the medically named disease based on their symptoms. It is possible to have a disease and to feel perfectly fine as some diseases are well advanced before the patient begins to feel unwell however there is also disease’s which makes the patient feel unwell straight away.
Ill Health as a disorder
Ill Health is related to life threatening diseases; this is related to an organ, tissue or body system which does not function in the right way. An example of this could be if the heart misses a beat then there is a specific fault in the cardiovascular system.
Ill Health as a subjective feeling of illness
Illness is that subjective feeling that a person has when they feel unwell. Sometimes it could be that you feel unwell but there are no symptoms to how you are feeling. This is a person’s own definition of their lack of health. On the other hand if a person is seriously ill, all three the concepts of ill health will happen. All three concepts will not happen all in one, they will happen one after one.
