Haiti is a country located on the western end of the island Hispaniola in the Caribbean whose borders encompass approximately 27,750 square kilometers of land and house an estimated 10,848,000 people. Haiti shares its warm, humid, tropical climate with the rest of the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic borders Haiti to the east, the Atlantic Ocean in the north, and the Caribbean Sea in the west. Mountains cover much of Haiti, limiting the amount of flat land that can be used for farming. Deforestation since the time of French colonialism leads to soil erosion, which ruins much potential farmland. The island is also susceptible to natural disasters, as it lies in the center of the Caribbean hurricane belt and sits atop two active faults. One
