The sociopolitical and economic turmoil of extreme poverty is currently ravaging Haiti, and has caused the exploitation of many Haitian citizens. There is a quarrel between the politicians that cannot reach an end, and as a result, the nation is imploding, mostly because of its poor system of education. “Haiti and the Dominican Republic have shared the same island and the same basic climate and geography, yet Haiti is considerably poorer,” commented author Karen Fragla Smith (2010, para. 1), in her intuitive article “Reasons Behind Haiti’s Poverty.” Generally, the causes of Haiti’s poverty seem to have radically different roots than in many other countries, at least when looking at land ownership and distribution of wealth. …show more content…
Ell (2010) added that, “Surviving residents were dispersed throughout the tent cities that sprang up in Port-au-Prince after the quake” (para. 6). This illustrates how gruesome the living situation was after the earth tremor. In spite of the survival of some institutions, staff and students were frightened to work in them, Ell claimed. Consequently, classes were offered under tarps adjacent to schools. Because of the earth tremor, the learning process was really chaotic in Haiti; students were dramatically affected, which caused their average grades to drop from 80 percent to 40 percent, said Ell. Though their capability to retain information has been damaged, students feel that school is like medicine for them. It stimulates them to obliterate this painful tragedy from their minds, since the living circumstances were austere prior to the quake, and got worse afterward. In Haiti, children who start school at the right age are more likely to finish school on time, and it is extremely difficult to know how many students are enrolled in accredited institutions, since there is no recruitment. Many of the students are forced to leave school before the sixth grade. After the government and NGO’s had a go at the issues of Haiti’s huge dysfunctional educational system, information was collected through a parental questionnaire which found that parents are unable to afford to aid their pupils, because of the shortage of employment in the country. It is so critical for students to get the transportation needed to get to school, especially those who are in the countryside walking long kilometers to get to their school. Most schools in Haiti do not own sufficient materials to appropriately instruct the students, according to Ell. They do not have scientific laboratories for students to put their knowledge into practices, computer labs to get more
