Did you know that the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the Dentist ranks number two (2) for the hottest job in America? Dentist mitigate tooth decay, fill cavities, extract irremediable teeth, and repair fractured teeth. They also diagnose dental maladies, execute corrective procedures and often provide therapeutic advice to patients as well. For a variety of reasons the dental profession piqued my interest in this career and I want to investigate further about it to determine if this job is really for me. Also, I want to examine the requisites I would need to pursue to become a dentist, and whether is it a good option for me. Many parts of what I found excites me because dentists always learn new things, they help people live healthier lives, and they find new solutions to cure or prevent an array of oral maladies. The work environment for a dentist usually involves a small group of highly dedicated and professional people. Dentist practitioners wear personal protective equipment which includes gloves, glasses / goggles, and respriatory face masks to mitigate the change for airborne transmission of disease. They usually work full time everyday and must be available at all hours in the event of a patient dental emergency. To become a dentist you need to complete specific science courses in college, then you need to complete a two to four year residency program related to the specialty you intend to practice. For instance, a pedidonsist specialized in the dental care for children. A periodontist specializes in the treatment and cure of dental diseases, including gum aliments. An endodontist specializes in the restoration of broken tooth structure. After that I researched at the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov) to investigation annual compensation of the average dentists. I found that the median salary is $158,000, which I thought was pretty good. Then I saw that the lowest amount of compensation a Dentist can earn was $70,000 which seems rather low in exchange for the all of the educational endeavours that one needs to complete beforehand. On the other hand the highest compensation was approximately $208,000 annually. I was interested to know about the job outlook for this career and found that in 2014 there were 153,000 people practicing in this profession. Additionally, by 2024 this job is expected to grow by 14% which seemed to me to be very promising as a career choice. I found out that the exact number of additional jobs in 2024 is forecasted at
